An SEO consultant brings senior experience into your team without the cost of a full-time hire or a full agency retainer. The job is to make better decisions faster: which problems matter, which opportunities are worth pursuing, how to sequence the work, and how to tell whether it is working.
In practice that might mean reviewing your analytics and setting up a roadmap, sitting in on planning meetings, reviewing pages and tickets before they ship, or advising leadership on whether a proposed redesign puts organic traffic at risk. The consultant does the thinking; your team, or a partner of your choice, does the doing.
Consulting suits teams that have people who can implement — writers, developers, marketers — but lack senior SEO direction. Done-for-you SEO suits businesses that do not have that capacity in-house.
| SEO consulting | Done-for-you SEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Who implements | Your team | Our team |
| Best for | Companies with in-house marketers or developers | Businesses without SEO capacity |
| Typical cost | From £450 per day or a monthly advisory retainer | Monthly plans from £300 |
| Knowledge stays | In your team | Shared through documentation |
Many clients start with done-for-you SEO and move to consulting as their team grows, or the other way round. Compare options on our SEO services page.
Most in-house teams have more SEO ideas than time. The most valuable thing a consultant can do is say no to most of them. We build a roadmap that ranks initiatives by expected impact, confidence and effort, makes dependencies clear — for example, that a content push will underperform until indexing problems are fixed — and sets the measures that will show whether each piece of work paid off.
The roadmap is reviewed every month or quarter, because priorities change as results come in, products launch and search itself changes.
We fit around how your team already works. That means joining your planning rituals, writing tickets in your project tool, reviewing pull requests or staging builds when SEO is affected, and keeping documentation where your team can find it.
The aim is for your team to become more capable over time. Every recommendation comes with the reasoning behind it, so the next similar decision can be made without us.
We run practical training sessions tailored to the people in the room:
Sessions can be remote or on site. Leeds and Yorkshire teams can book in-person workshops, and we travel elsewhere in the UK on request.
Redesigns, replatforms and domain moves are where in-house teams most often need senior SEO support, because the risks are high and the work is one-off. We review the plan before development starts, specify URL and redirect rules, check staging builds for noindex tags, canonical errors and missing content, sign off launch readiness, and monitor Search Console and analytics for the weeks afterwards. Your developers do the build; we make sure organic traffic survives it. Our technical SEO services describe the full migration process.
If you already work with an SEO agency, an independent consultant can help you get more from them. We review their strategy, the work they have delivered and the way they report, then tell you plainly what is working, what is not and what to ask for. If their work is good, we will say so. If they are buying links or reporting rankings for terms nobody searches, we will say that too.
Second opinions are also useful before big decisions: whether to consolidate two websites, whether a proposed content strategy is realistic, or whether a sudden traffic drop is a penalty, an algorithm update or a tracking fault.
Ecommerce teams often have strong trading and development skills but limited SEO depth. We advise on category architecture, faceted navigation rules, product data, internal linking and platform-specific issues for Shopify, WooCommerce and Magento, and we review new templates before they launch. See our ecommerce SEO services if you would rather we handled delivery too.
A typical advisory month includes a planning call at the start to agree priorities, async support by email or Slack as questions come up, reviews of tickets, briefs or pages before they go live, and a review call at the end to look at results and update the roadmap. You receive written notes after every call so decisions are recorded.
For one-off needs, consulting days can be booked individually with no ongoing commitment.
In each case, a few days of senior input early on usually saves far more than it costs, either by avoiding a costly mistake or by focusing effort on the work that will pay back. If you are not sure which format suits you, a single consulting day is a low-risk way to find out.
Many in-house marketers need to win budget before they can do any SEO at all. We help build realistic business cases: search demand for your priority topics, a conservative estimate of the share you could win, expected conversion rates from your own data, and the investment and timeline required. We present ranges rather than single numbers and make the assumptions explicit, so finance teams can challenge them. Our SEO ROI calculator shows the basic model.
Consulting is only valuable if the advice is right. Much of SEO is judgement: deciding which of two plausible explanations for a traffic drop is correct, whether a proposed site structure will scale, or when a risk is worth taking. That judgement comes from seeing many sites, many migrations and many algorithm updates. Our consulting is delivered by senior strategists, led by our founder, and we tell you when a question is outside our expertise rather than guessing.
Plenty of Leeds businesses do not want an agency. They want one experienced person who will look at the site, say what is wrong and help fix it, without an account manager in between and without signing up to a monthly retainer. That is what hiring a freelance SEO consultant means here: you work direct with the consultant who does the thinking, you pay a day rate for the time you use, and you stop when the job is done.
A freelance engagement suits a specific question or project: a second opinion before a redesign, a keyword and page plan for a new service, a review of why enquiries dropped, or a training day for the person who looks after the website. If the consulting shows that you need work delivered every month as well as advice, that is the point to look at how we work as an SEO agency in Leeds, or at local SEO services if map visibility is the problem.
Every format ends with written outputs, so the value stays with your team after the session.

With a freelance consultant you pay a day rate for specific advice, work direct with the person doing it and have no ongoing commitment. An agency retainer is a monthly fee for continuous delivery of technical work, content and links by a team. Consulting suits businesses with someone in-house to implement.
It starts with a short call and access to Search Console and analytics. The consultant then reviews the site, your local visibility in the parts of Leeds you serve and the competitors above you, and delivers written recommendations in priority order with a follow-up call. Most of it is remote, with on-site sessions by arrangement.
Our SEO consulting starts from £450 per day. Monthly advisory retainers are priced on the number of days or calls you need. Prices exclude VAT.
A consultant advises and your team implements. An agency usually does the implementation too. We offer both, so you can choose the model that fits your team.
