Our technical SEO audit process

A technical SEO audit is only useful if it ends in decisions. Many audits are exported straight from a crawler and run to hundreds of pages of warnings, most of which do not matter. Ours rank every issue by its likely effect on organic traffic and revenue, and by how hard it is to fix, so the first sprint goes on the problems that are actually holding the site back.

What we look at

We combine a full crawl of the site with Google Search Console data, server log files where available, and a manual review of key templates. The crawl shows what exists, Search Console shows what Google indexed and how it performs, and log files show where Googlebot spends its time. Comparing the three reveals the real problems: valuable pages Google rarely visits, junk URLs it visits constantly, and templates that render differently for search engines than for people.

What you receive

A findings document written for decision-makers and a ticket list written for developers. Each ticket names the affected URLs or templates, the evidence, the fix, the acceptance criteria and an effort estimate. If you want the audit as a one-off, see our SEO audit services.

02

Crawl and index issues

The most damaging technical problems are usually indexing problems. In Search Console’s Page Indexing report, pages marked "Discovered — currently not indexed" or "Crawled — currently not indexed" are pages Google found but decided were not worth indexing. On large sites, that often includes commercially important pages.

Common causes include thin or duplicated templates, weak internal links signalling low importance, canonical tags pointing to the wrong URL, accidental noindex tags left over from staging, and crawl budget wasted on faceted navigation, session IDs and calendar pages. We trace each cause back to its source in the CMS or code and fix it there, rather than patching individual URLs.

  • XML sitemaps that list only indexable, canonical URLs
  • Robots.txt rules that block waste without blocking resources Google needs to render
  • Redirect chains collapsed to single hops
  • Soft 404s and thin pages consolidated or improved
  • Internal links pointing to final URLs, not redirects

If you need a quick robots.txt, our free robots.txt generator has presets for WordPress and Shopify. To check the basics yourself first, work through our technical SEO checklist.

Core Web Vitals and page speed

Core Web Vitals are Google’s page experience metrics. A page passes when, for at least 75% of real visits, Largest Contentful Paint is 2.5 seconds or less, Interaction to Next Paint is 200 milliseconds or less, and Cumulative Layout Shift is 0.1 or less. They are a modest ranking factor, but slow pages lose visitors and conversions regardless of rankings.

We diagnose from field data in the Chrome UX Report and Search Console first, then use lab tools such as Lighthouse to find the cause. Typical fixes include serving correctly sized modern image formats, preloading the hero image, removing render-blocking scripts, reducing third-party tags, self-hosting fonts, and reserving space for images and adverts so the layout does not jump. Deeper front-end work sits with our website speed optimisation service.

04

Schema and structured data

Structured data helps search engines understand what a page is about and can make it eligible for rich results such as product prices, breadcrumbs and review snippets. It also helps AI search features identify entities and relationships on your site. Google says structured data is not required to appear in AI Overviews; our guide on how to rank in AI Overviews covers what is.

We implement JSON-LD for the schema types that fit your content — Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, Product, Article, BreadcrumbList and FAQPage among them — and we follow Google’s rule that structured data must describe content visible on the page. Markup that claims reviews or ratings you do not display, for example, risks a manual action. Every implementation is validated with the Rich Results Test and the Schema.org validator before launch.

Site migrations

A redesign, a move to a new platform or a domain change is the single riskiest moment for organic traffic. Most migration losses are caused by missed redirects, changed URLs without a plan, lost content and internal links, and launches that happen without anyone checking what Google sees.

  • A full inventory of URLs with traffic, links and rankings before anything changes
  • A one-to-one redirect map from every old URL to its closest new equivalent
  • Staging checks for noindex, canonicals, robots rules, schema and internal links
  • Launch-day verification of redirects and a fresh crawl
  • Eight weeks of monitoring in Search Console and analytics, with fixes as issues appear

Our website redesign SEO checklist covers the process in detail. Migration support is available as a fixed project from £1,500.

06

Technical SEO deliverables

Whether you take a one-off audit or ongoing technical support, you receive the same core documents, written so that both your leadership and your developers can act on them.

  • An executive summary with the five issues that matter most
  • A prioritised issue list with evidence, fix and effort for each
  • Developer-ready tickets you can paste into Jira, Linear or Trello
  • A redirect map and sitemap specification where relevant
  • A post-fix verification crawl showing what was resolved

JavaScript SEO and rendering

Modern websites built with React, Next.js, Vue or similar frameworks can be excellent for SEO, or invisible to it, depending on how they render. Google can render JavaScript, but rendering is deferred and resource-limited, and other search engines and AI crawlers are often less capable. If your main content, links or metadata only appear after JavaScript runs, some of it may never be seen. Our AI SEO guide lists the main AI crawlers and what each one is for.

We compare the raw HTML your server sends with the rendered page, check that internal links are real anchor tags with href attributes, confirm titles, canonicals and structured data are present without JavaScript, and look for content hidden behind interactions. Where problems exist, server-side rendering or static generation for key templates usually solves them. We write those recommendations in terms your engineering team will recognise.

08

International sites and hreflang

If you serve more than one country or language, hreflang annotations tell Google which version of a page to show to which audience. They are easy to get wrong: missing return links, incorrect language or region codes, and hreflang pointing at redirected or non-canonical URLs are all common. Errors can mean UK visitors see your US pages, or the wrong currency ranks in each market.

We audit hreflang across the whole site, choose the right structure for your markets — country folders, subdomains or separate domains — and make sure canonicals and hreflang agree. Our international SEO service covers market strategy as well as the technical set-up.

When you need technical SEO help

  • Organic traffic has dropped and you do not know why
  • You are planning a redesign, replatform or domain change
  • Search Console shows large numbers of pages not indexed
  • Your site is built on a JavaScript framework and some pages do not rank at all
  • Core Web Vitals are failing on key templates
  • You have a large site with filters, parameters or user-generated pages

If any of these apply, a technical audit is usually the right first step before investing in content or links.

How we prove technical fixes worked

Each fix is logged with its release date so we can compare indexing, crawl activity, Core Web Vitals and organic clicks before and after. Where a fix does not produce the expected change, we report that too. Published results will appear on our case studies page once clients have approved them.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Need something more specific? Ask a strategist

01What is a technical SEO audit?

A technical SEO audit checks whether search engines can crawl, render and index your site properly, and whether performance, structure and structured data support rankings. Ours ends with a prioritised list of fixes and developer-ready tickets.

02How much does a technical SEO audit cost?

Our technical SEO audits start from £995 for small and medium sites. Large ecommerce or enterprise sites are quoted after a short scoping call. Prices exclude VAT.

03How long does a technical audit take?

Most audits take two to three weeks from access being granted to the findings walkthrough. Very large sites, or sites where we analyse server logs, can take longer.

04Can you implement the fixes or only recommend them?

Both. We can implement directly on WordPress, Shopify and many custom stacks, or write tickets for your developers and review their work before release.

05Do Core Web Vitals really affect rankings?

They are a confirmed but modest ranking factor. The bigger reason to fix them is that slow, jumpy pages lose visitors and conversions. We prioritise them where field data shows real users are affected.

06Can you help with a website migration?

Yes. We plan redirects, check staging, verify launch and monitor for eight weeks afterwards. Migration support starts from £1,500 as a fixed project.

07Do you need access to our server logs?

Not always. Log files are valuable on large sites with crawl budget issues. For most small and medium sites, a crawl plus Search Console data is enough.
