Google’s original breakthrough was treating links as votes, and links remain one of the strongest signals it uses to judge which pages deserve to rank. The difference today is that Google is far better at ignoring links that were not given editorially. A hundred links from article directories and paid placements may do nothing at all, while a handful from respected publications in your industry can move the needle.
For competitive terms, links are often the deciding factor between pages that are otherwise equally relevant. If your content and technical foundations are strong but you are stuck on page two, a lack of authority is the likely reason. That is when link building becomes the priority — and it is why our SEO services only lean on links once the basics are in place.
Good outreach is closer to PR than to sales. We research the publications, journalists and site owners who genuinely cover your topic, find a reason for them to care, and contact them personally. There are no mass email blasts and no templates sent to thousands of addresses.
Guest posting has a bad reputation because most of it is paid placement on sites that exist only to sell links. Done properly, it means writing a genuinely useful article for a publication your customers read, with a link where it helps the reader. We only pitch sites with a real audience and editorial standards, and we write content worth publishing. See our guest posting and outreach service for more.
Digital PR earns links at scale by giving journalists something worth writing about. Campaigns usually start with data — a survey, an analysis of public data, or insight from your own business — turned into a story with a clear headline. We also run reactive PR, offering your experts as sources when journalists need comment on breaking news in your sector.
Digital PR links tend to come from high-authority news sites, which makes them powerful but harder to target to specific pages. We pair PR with internal linking so authority flows to the commercial pages that need it.
Some link building tactics work for a while and then cost you a manual action, a lost year and a disavow file. We do not use them, and we will tell you if a competitor’s rankings appear to depend on them.
Google’s spam policies describe these tactics as link schemes. The risk is not theoretical, and a business with an inherited messy backlink profile is better served by cleaning up than by adding to it.
Every month you receive a list of every link earned, with the linking page, the publication, the target page and how it was earned. We also report on the outcome that matters: rankings and organic traffic for the pages we are supporting. If a campaign underperforms, we say so and explain what we will change.
Third-party metrics such as Domain Rating or Authority Score are useful shortcuts, but they are not what Google uses, and they are easy to inflate. We judge a potential link on questions that matter more:
One link that passes every test is worth more than dozens that pass none.
The easiest links to earn are the ones people want to give. Linkable assets are resources other sites cite naturally: original research and survey data, free tools and calculators, definitive guides, templates, and clear explanations of complicated topics. We help you choose assets that fit your expertise and audience, build them, and promote them to the people most likely to reference them.
Our own free SEO tools are an example of the approach: useful on their own, relevant to our services, and the kind of resource other sites link to.
For local businesses, the most valuable links are often not from big national sites but from local ones: chambers of commerce, business associations, local news sites, event sponsorships, suppliers, universities and community organisations. For Leeds and Yorkshire businesses, regional publications and organisations carry local relevance that a national link cannot. Industry links — from trade bodies, specialist publications and professional directories — do the same for your sector. See our local SEO services for how this fits in.
Many high-quality links point to a homepage, a blog post or a data study rather than the commercial pages you want to rank. Internal links pass that authority on. Every link campaign we run is paired with an internal linking plan so the authority you earn reaches the service, category and location pages that bring in revenue.
Some sites come to us with a history: links bought by a previous agency, a past link network, or a domain bought with existing links attached. Before building anything new, we review the profile for patterns Google’s spam policies describe, such as large numbers of paid links, sitewide footer links and exact-match anchor text from unrelated sites. If there is a manual action in Search Console, we prepare a clean-up and reconsideration request. If there is not, we usually focus on earning good links rather than disavowing, because Google already ignores most low-quality links on its own.
Not every valuable mention includes a link. Being cited by name in industry publications, podcasts, reviews and expert round-ups builds recognition with buyers and helps search engines and AI systems understand who you are and what you are known for. We track unlinked mentions, ask for a link where it makes sense, and treat consistent, positive coverage as part of authority building rather than a separate PR exercise. Our AI SEO guide covers the evidence that mentions matter for AI answers.

No. Buying links that pass ranking credit breaches Google’s spam policies. Everything we build is earned through content, PR and outreach.
Digital PR uses PR techniques, such as data-led stories and expert comment, to earn coverage and links from online publications. It is one of the most effective ways to earn high-authority links.
Only if there is clear evidence of manipulative links, such as paid links or a previous link scheme. Google ignores most low-quality links on its own, so disavowing without good reason can do more harm than good.
