Answer engine optimization: a practical guide for UK businesses

Answer engine optimization (AEO) makes a business easier to discover and cite when a search product answers a question directly. Publish accurate, crawlable answers with evidence and measure the enquiries that follow. For Google's AI search features, pages must be indexed, eligible for snippets and included in Search generative AI features in Search Console.

The name is new enough to attract promises that no one can verify. A business should ask a simpler question: if a customer asks an AI system which service fits their problem, can that system find a clear, trustworthy answer about this business? This guide covers how to improve that answer without turning the website into a collection of thin FAQ pages. For Google's specific product, see our [AI Overviews guide](/blog/how-to-rank-in-ai-overviews/).

What does answer engine optimization mean?

AEO is the practice of making useful information available in a form that answer systems can retrieve and explain. Those systems include Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, conventional featured snippets, and assistants that search the web. They may answer in different ways, so no single layout or file guarantees a mention.

Google's current AI optimisation guide says a page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet before it can be a supporting link. The site must also be included in Search generative AI features through Search Console. Google does not require special AEO markup. The practical starting point is access, relevant content and an accurate page that helps the reader decide; other platforms have different retrieval methods.

How is AEO different from SEO and GEO?

SEO aims to earn visibility in unpaid search results and useful visits. AEO focuses on the part of that journey where the product composes a direct answer. Generative engine optimization (GEO) is often used for visibility inside generative answers. These labels overlap in practice and are not separate certification standards.

TermMain questionUseful measure
SEOCan people find and visit the right page?Qualified organic clicks and enquiries
AEOIs the business present and accurately explained in direct answers?Relevant mentions, citations and resulting enquiries
GEOIs a source cited or used in a generated answer?Cited URLs, accurate brand description and referral traffic

Treat the table as an operating model, not a claim that every platform defines the labels this way. Google explicitly notes that AEO and GEO are terms used by third parties, and recommends checking any claimed tactic against its official SEO guidance. The AI SEO pillar guide covers the broader channel; this post concentrates on the steps a small team can take and verify.

How do answer engines find a source?

An answer system may retrieve live web pages, use its own index, or draw on other data available to it. It then selects information relevant to the prompt and may show a supporting link. Different products can produce different answers for the same question, and the same product can change its answer over time.

For Google, the foundation is especially clear: a page needs to be crawlable, indexed and eligible for a snippet, and the site needs Search generative AI inclusion enabled. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode can use query fan-out, searching related subtopics to build a response. A page that explains the service, the location, the price basis and the limits of a recommendation gives the system more useful evidence than a page that repeats a headline claim. None of that guarantees citation.

Make the answer visible in the page itself

Put a direct answer near the start of the relevant section, then explain the mechanism and evidence. Use descriptive headings, plain HTML text and a sensible page structure. A screenshot of key information or a widget that loads only after a click is harder for a reader, and sometimes a crawler, to use than visible text.

The goal is extraction without loss of meaning. For example, a page answering “How much does SEO cost?” should say what the price covers and when it changes. Our UK SEO cost guide gives ranges and decision factors, while the pricing page states this agency's current packages. A bare price with no scope can be repeated accurately yet mislead the customer.

Make claims checkable

An answer is stronger when it names who is speaking, when the information was updated and what evidence supports it. On a service site, that means a consistent business name and contact details, a real author or reviewer where appropriate, and specific descriptions of the service. On an informational page, link to the source of changing rules, technical requirements or statistics.

Do not invent client results, reviews or credentials to appear authoritative. Google asks publishers to create helpful, reliable, people-first content. If your strongest proof is a clear process and published prices, show those honestly. A customer can judge that information, and an answer system can cite it without repeating a fabricated claim.

What should a small business optimise first?

Start with the questions closest to a buying decision. A clear service page, pricing explanation and contact path may be more valuable than dozens of top-of-funnel definitions. Choose queries where you have a distinct answer and an outcome you can measure.

  1. List the questions customers ask before they buy: fit, price, location, timeline, alternatives and risks.
  2. Match each question to an existing page; create a new page only when the intent is genuinely different.
  3. Inspect the page in Search Console and check that its answer is visible in the rendered HTML.
  4. Rewrite vague openings so the answer appears first, followed by evidence, limits and a next step.
  5. Add relevant internal links so readers can move from explanation to service, price or contact.
  6. Test the actual questions in the products your customers use, record citations and check whether the answer is accurate.
  7. Repeat the test after meaningful page changes, and review leads rather than mentions alone.

This is a process checklist, not a promise of ranking. For a Leeds service business, a useful path might run from “What does a local SEO audit include?” to an audit explanation and then a free audit request. One excellent page can answer several related questions; creating separate pages for every prompt can confuse both readers and search engines.

Does schema markup help AEO?

Structured data can help search engines understand eligible page information when it accurately matches visible content. It is not a shortcut into AI answers. Use the schema type that describes the page, include only facts actually present, and validate the result. Google does not list special schema as a requirement for AI Overviews or AI Mode.

Be particularly careful with FAQ claims. Google retired FAQ rich results in May 2026. A useful FAQ can still help a person, but adding FAQPage markup to a commercial blog should not be sold as a route to a Google FAQ result. The information itself matters more than the markup label.

How can you measure answer visibility without fooling yourself?

Measure a fixed set of real customer questions, not one flattering screenshot. Record the prompt, platform, date, geography, answer, cited URL and whether the brand description was accurate. Retest the same set periodically, because results vary by prompt and context. Mark a mention separately from a cited link, a click and an enquiry.

SignalWhat it showsWhat it cannot prove
Mention in an answerThe brand was named for this test promptStable visibility across all users
Citation to a pageThe answer displayed that URL as a sourceThat the citation caused a sale
Referral visitA visitor arrived from a detectable sourceEvery answer-led visit, including untracked ones
Qualified enquiryThe business received a relevant leadThat AEO alone caused it

Use Search Console for Google's search performance and analytics for visits and actions. Its Generative AI performance report now shows impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode; the report may be absent if a site has too few impressions. Combine that view with enquiry questions such as “How did you find us?” and the prompt log. If mentions rise but qualified demand does not, revise the question set or destination page before buying another visibility tool.

Which AEO tactics waste time or create risk?

Avoid any tactic that claims a guaranteed AI citation. Repeating the same question and answer across thin pages adds little information. Publishing a list of statistics without sources makes an answer fragile. Blocking useful pages with noindex while buying an AEO tool puts measurement ahead of access.

Also be cautious with platform-specific folklore. A file or schema type may have a valid use, but Google's published AI-search guidance does not require a special AEO file or markup. Check the primary documentation before investing in a “must-have” tactic. The stronger test is whether a reader can find a complete, accurate answer and take the next step.

08

What does an AEO-ready page look like?

An AEO-ready page states the answer, explains who it applies to, supplies evidence and points to the next decision. Consider a local business answering “Do I need local SEO or national SEO?” The page should define the difference, show which customer searches trigger map results, explain its service area and link to the appropriate service. It should also say when local SEO is a poor fit, such as a product sold nationally with no local buying intent.

That example adds decision value rather than repeating a definition. The same principle applies to timelines, pricing and audits: give the reader criteria they can use. To build a starting set of pages, work through our local SEO checklist and AI SEO guide, then test the questions your customers actually ask.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Need something more specific? Ask a strategist

01Is answer engine optimization the same as SEO?

AEO overlaps heavily with SEO because answer systems still need accessible, relevant information. AEO places extra attention on whether a page can supply a clear, accurate answer to a specific question.

02Will AEO replace traditional search?

No one can establish that from one platform's current design. Businesses should measure both search visits and answer-led enquiries, then fund the work that helps real customers.

03Can I pay Google to appear in AI Overviews?

Paying for advertising does not buy an organic supporting link in Google's AI features. Google says the same search foundations apply to eligibility, and inclusion is never guaranteed.

04Does an FAQ section guarantee an AI citation?

No. An FAQ can make answers easier for readers to find, but an answer system chooses its own sources. The answers still need to be accurate, distinctive and supported.

05Do I need an llms.txt file?

Google says llms.txt has no positive or negative effect on its Search visibility. Keep essential pages accessible and useful first; judge any extra file by documented support and observable results on other systems.

06Should I create a page for every AI prompt?

No. Group questions that share an intent on one strong page and create a separate page when the reader needs a different answer or action. Too many near-duplicate pages can weaken the site.

07Can structured data force an answer engine to cite me?

No. Structured data can describe visible facts to systems that support it, but it cannot force retrieval or citation. Keep markup accurate and validate it after publication.

08How do I track ChatGPT or other assistant referrals?

Check analytics for detectable referral visits and record the pages those visitors use. Some answer-led discovery will not be attributed cleanly, so compare referral data with enquiries and a repeatable prompt sample.

09Should I allow every AI crawler?

That is a business and content-rights decision, because different crawlers have different purposes. Read each platform's current documentation and your site's policy before changing robots rules; do not assume one crawler setting controls all AI products.

10What should I do if an AI answer gets my business wrong?

Correct the authoritative page first: business name, service scope, location, prices and contact details. Keep other official profiles consistent, then retest the exact prompt and record whether the answer changes.

11Which answer engines should you optimize for?

Start with the answer products your customers actually use and the questions that influence a purchase. Record a small, repeatable prompt set for each product rather than assuming one platform's citations represent all of AI search.

12How long does AEO take to show results?

There is no reliable universal AEO deadline because each answer product retrieves and refreshes sources differently. Check whether the source page is accessible first, then compare the same prompts and qualified enquiries over time without treating one mention as a stable result.
